Nature Wonders - CAPE PENINSULA - Cape Of Good Hope

for its Bear Baboons that consume roots, flowers, insects and also seafood. ... travel CAPE PENINSULA Cape Good Hope ... NWG-DVD-113 - Cape Peninsula is located the southernmost tip of the African continent and is famous throughout the world. This area of almost eight thousand hectares and coastline of around forty kilometres is abundant with nature, and the sky adds that extra touch of inspiration. In all its natural splendour, the rocky landscape of Cape Point is one of the peninsula's main attractions. The reservation's wildlife is an active part of the scenery as it is a safe sanctuary for mountain zebra, antelope, goat and deer. Shoals of tuna, dolphin, seal and even whale live in the raging sea and more than a hundred and sixty species of bird indicate the unique quality of this natural habitat. Smitswinkelbay is known for its Bear Baboons that consume roots, flowers, insects and also seafood. (more) (less)

Nature Wonders KNYSNA -Garden Of Eden

rocks and boulders all is peaceful and idyllic, a place where ornithologists can observe a large variety of birdlife ... NWG-DVD-137 - Two impressive sandstone cliffs known as The Heads flank the magnificent lagoon of Knysna on the South African coast close to the Indian Ocean. The Knysna Lagoon is not only popular with tourists as the combination of both salt and freshwater from the Outeniqua Mountains also attracts many endangered species of fish. The lagoon is home to the rare Knysna Seahorse that is otherwise known as the Hipocampus Capensis. Moving inland from the estuary and the two Heads the water becomes increasingly calm. Indeed it is difficult to believe that only a few kilometres away lies one of the most treacherous and feared coastlines in the world. But beyond the lagoon's rocks and boulders all is peaceful and idyllic, a place where ornithologists can observe a large variety of birdlife. (more) (less)

South Africa State of Emergency 1980's

the death penalty. The rest is history... ... South Africa State of Emergency violence nelson madela PW Botha vlakplaas ... Rare footage of the increasing civil unrest and township violence that led to the government declaring a State of Emergency on 20 July 1985, giving it the power to deal with resistance to apartheid. More human rights were violated during this period than ever before. It became a criminal offence to threaten someone verbally or possess documents that the government perceived to be threatening. It was illegal to advise anyone to stay away from work or oppose the government. It was illegal, too, to disclose the name of anyone arrested under the State of Emergency until the government saw fit to release that name. People could face up to ten years' imprisonment for these offences. However, although the government increased its repressive measures, it was not enough to secure a lasting position in power. Then-President P.W. Botha declared the State of Emergency in 36 magisterial districts. Areas affected were the Eastern Cape, and the PWV region ("Pretoria, Witwatersrand, Vereeniging"). Three months later the Western Cape was included as well. During this state of emergency about 2,436 people were detained under the Internal Security Act. This act gave police and the military sweeping powers. The government could implement curfews controlling the movement of people. The president could rule by decree without referring to the constitution or to parliament. Four days before the ten-year commemoration of the Soweto uprising, another state of emergency was declared on 12 June 1986 to cover the whole country. The government amended the Public Security Act, expanding its powers to include the right to declare certain places "unrest areas". This allowed the state to employ extraordinary measures to crush protests in these areas. Television cameras were banned from entering "unrest areas". The state broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) provided propaganda in support of the government. This version of reality was challenged by a range of pro-ANC alternative publications. In 1989, with the State of Emergency extended to a fourth year, Prime Minister Botha met Mandela and agreed to work for a peaceful solution to the conflict in the country. Talks commenced with the ANC, prominent business leaders, the Commonwealth and the Eminent Persons Group. The state of emergency continued until 1990, when F.W. de Klerk became the State President, and lifted the 30-year ban on leading anti-apartheid groups the African National Congress, the smaller Pan Africanist Congress and the South African Communist Party. He also made his first public commitment to release jailed ANC leader Nelson Mandela, returned to press freedom and suspend the death penalty. The rest is history... (more) (less)

Life in Joburg

Apartheid. This is what War of the Worlds should have been like. Live in Joburg es un cortometraje de ficcin dirigido ... Alive In Joburg, a stellar short film directed by Neill Blomkamp, is an unsettling and eerie tale of a close encounter of the third kind in Johannesburg, South Africa. The discrimination of visitors from another world makes for an interesting allusion to Apartheid. This is what War of the Worlds should have been like.
