South African Defence Force: The Citizen Force at War (1966-1989)

After completing their two years of military service, South African conscripts were alotted to the Citizen Force. Here they served for ten years, 60 days per year. The Citizen Force made up the bulk of the SADF's conventional forces and included first class fighting units such as the 1st Transvaal Scottish, the Rand Light Infantry or the Natal Carbineers. The units were deployed operationally during the border war (1966-1989). Up to 1990 the units experienced a reporting rate of over 100 percent, given that many men volunteered. After 1990 the reporting rate dropped dramatically as people realised that the war was finally over and the Government was preparing to hand power to the ANC. After 1994 most units were disbanded.

South African Defence Force - Infantry School 1986

Situated on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn, the School of Infantry trained the junior leaders for South Africa's mot. Infantry. The training was rigorous by any standards and less than half the candidates completed the course. It involved a platoon weapons phase, an endurance march covering 140 kilometers through the Swartberg mountains, a conventional warfare phase, urban and rural counterinsugency phases. The candidates were deployed operationally in Sector 10 along the SWA border as well as during the riots in support of the South African Police (SAP). Some of the footage in this clip does not depict members of Infantry School but serves to provide historical context.
