Entry from: Nelspruit, South Africa Entry Title: "Jo'burg and Kruger National Park safari!" Entry: "Wow! Well, there is a lot to write but I will try my best to keep it reasonably short;), yeah right Cory says;). We are now in Durban after 2 weeks in South Africa, and we have seen a lot! We arrived in Cape Town on the 25th, and stayed 2 nights before flying north to Johannesburg to begin our southbound journey along the coast back to Cape Town within 30 days-yes, I know...a lot of land to cover, right? Yes-definitely a "crash course" of South Africa, but we both love it and want to come back-so we are not worried:). Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, and is absolutely beautiful. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and ex patriots to South Africa. As of 2007 the city had an estimated population of 3.5 million. We only spent a couple days there, but look forward to spending a few more at the end of our trip before flying back to Buenos Aires on the 24th. We were able to visit Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela spent 19 years as a political prisoner under Apartheid), explore the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, and finally eat food with some HEAT! We were ecstatic to see so many ethnic restaurants after being in Argentina for seven weeks with not very much variety in terms of food. I think if we never eat pizza, pasta, or toasted ham and cheese again we will be content. The first night we arrived we walked right into a Thai restaurant and ate our hearts out! Two local South Africans were sitting near by and quickly started chatting with us, before buying us "Welcome to South Africa" shooters-the Springbok (half South Africa Amarula Cream/half Creme de Menth), which were pretty tasty:). After a quick taste of Cape Town we flew to Johannesburg, or Jo'burg as it is often referred to. Now, prior to flying here we have heard the usual that Jo'burg is dangerous, and if we can avoid going there we should (we were even told this by South Africans). Originally it was not in our itinerary, but we figured it would be better to start our journey from the north starting with the safari. This way, if we didn't get lucky seeing animals at Kruger, we would have enough time to visit different parks along the route south (instead of taking the risk of ending our journey with a safari not seeing to much). So, Jo'burg it was:). Even though we were only there for a full day, we wanted to make the best of it and visit a museum or see a few sites. We decided to visit the Apartheid Museum http://www.apartheidmuseum.org/ which was worth every minute. We were advised that 2 hours was not enough time to really get the most out of the museum, so we arranged for a taxi to pick us up 5 hours later, allowing us about 3 1/2 hours in the museum after eating lunch. Well, we were actually rushing through the last few exhibits which was unfortunate. We could have easily stayed in there another 2 hours! Talk about an emotional experience-feelings of shock, sadness, disbelief, anger, hope...I could go on and on. The fact that these atrocities occurred in recent times (relatively speaking) is mind boggling. I question humanity when being reminded of these sad times in our history. We both left the building feeling pretty heavy, without words to describe what was just taken in. The very next morning bright and early we were off to Nelspruit-the springboard for Kruger National Park. We were excited about our 3 day safari, which we booked immediately once checked into our hostel. We stayed at Old Vic Inn, which is run by "Crazy Dave" and his wife Bella. The place was very nice, and the hosts made it even better! After a day and night of relaxation, we woke up at 3:30 am, had breakfast at 4-and we were off to Kruger with Dave and another couple from Japan for the following 3 days. We arrived at the gate at 5:30am, and upon entry into the park (which is the ..."
