http://www.africa-24.com The Durban Point Waterfront, one of South Africas most exciting and significant property development projects, is located on a prime site at the entrance to the busiest port in Africa, with outstanding views of the Indian Ocean and the Durban city skyline. This mixed-use waterfront development is a catalyst for renewed investment in the city-centre. A significant part of the charm of the Point Waterfront development is the juxtaposition of past and present, where listed buildings, such as the Point prison and the gracious 1906 Edwardian Port Supervisors houses have been restored to their former glory, and the historic Timeball, once again informs sailors and visitors alike of the time. The impetus for the development of the Point Waterfront came from the need to reticulate purified water from uShaka MarineWorld back to the sea via a canal. This lead to the idea of creating a unique waterfront city, in which the canals form the spine of urban redevelopment, with economic benefits of water frontage extended throughout the area. Ultimately the Waterfront initiative is not an attempt to extend the city fabric, nor is it intended to transform the area into an extended theme park or tourist resort.
